About the Solidoodle 4 3D Printer
The 4th generation Solidoodle 3D Printer is a fully enclosed, single extruder, steel framed machine. One of its primary features is the complete enclosure of the print bed & internal components, strongly promoted as an easy way to improve ABS prints by preventing air currents from negatively impacting the temperature of the print in progress. The Solidoodle printer is sleek in appearance, solid in build quality, and significantly quieter the competitor machines (due to the sound being contained within the enclosure). The Solidoodle 4 is compatible with ABS and PLA of most varieties sold here at 3D Supply Guys, though for best results we do recommend our Solidoodle brand ABS filament for use with this printer.
With the use of more “engineer friendly” open source software, the Solidoodle 4 is best suited to those who are more comfortable experimenting and tinkering to get the best results from the reliable hardware. The machine’s case features an internal fan with filter to vent the build chamber, and the internally mounted electronics are protected (via thermal isolation) from the high temperatures inside the device. A snap-in spool holder behind the machine feeds the filament, and an easy open lid gives you quick access to the machine’s internals & print bed.
One of the more unique features of this machine is the moving build platform. While the printer head and nozzle move along the XY axis, the heated printer bed moves vertically along the Z axis to facilitate the layering process. Calibration of the platform height is done via thumbwheel, without the need for additional tools.
This unit is delivered fully assembled and tested.
Additional Tech Specs
The Solidoodle 4 is compatible with Linux, OSX (Mac), and Windows operating systems. It uses the Repetier software along with Slic3r, and is able to print .stl files via USB connection. This particular machine draws approximately 150 watts of power, and reaches a maximum recommended temperature of 215 degrees celsius.
The Solidoodle 4 prints in thickness and precision ranging from .1mm – .4mm. Build volume available with this unit is 8″ x 8″ x 8″, or approximately 512 cubic inches. Print speed & flow rate may require some trial and error calculation, based on the specific print and material you choose to work with. The heated aluminum build platform on the Solidoodle 4 is a standard feature, and reaches a maximum temperature of 105 degrees Celsius.
