About Makerbot Replicator Z18

Thanks to the Makerbot Z18, bigger 3D prints are not only better, they’re also easier. This massive 3D printer has already proven its success in offices and homes worldwide, producing industrial-level prototypes with both consistent accuracy and pristine surface quality. Just like its smaller predecessors, the Z18 is integrated with Makerbot’s popular Smart Extruder technology; monitoring 3D prints in real time to ensure success. The Z18’s onboard color display provides an intuitive workflow experience; allowing quick access to digital model previews, settings, and assisted build plate leveling. Backed by Makerbot’s extensive line of cloud based applications, the Z18 takes additive manufacturing to a whole new level for businesses and professional consumers.

The Z18 is structurally stable and rigid, supported by a powder coated steel frame integrated with PC-ABS and aluminum composite materials. The swappable Smart Extruder system features a .4 mm brass nozzle that can handle 1.75 mm PLA filament. Makerbot’s Z18 boasts dual lead screws on either side as well as a set of steel guide rods that keep the Z axis stable, especially for tall prints where even layer placement is crucial for professional results. The integrated 3.5” color LCD screen features 320 x 240 resolution and sits prominently on the front of the unit so that users have quick access to vital print settings and other diagnostics. The open areas of the frame are protected with clear acrylic; protecting prints from warping due to temperature changes and air flow.

Due to its size, the Z18 offers a durable gantry system that helps to dampen vibration and ensure smooth motion along its axes. The unit measures 19.4” x 22.2” x 33.9” overall and features a huge 11.8” x 12” x 18” build envelope. This requires two sets of highly efficient NEMA motors that perform 1.8˚ step angles with 1/16th micro-stepping motion. Equipped with a single Smart Extruder, users can quickly swap out a replacement in the event of print failure before disaster occurs thanks to a modular drop-in design. The Z18 also features an array of connectivity options including USB cable, USB stick, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet.

The Z18’s Smart Extruder can sense the absence of filament and notify the user before any issue occurs. It can accommodate both OEM and 3rd party PLA filament in .2 kg and .9 kg sizes in addition to both XL and XXL spools for marathon 3D printing. Backed by a variety of colors and plastic characteristics, users can select from Makerbot’s wide range of filaments. All Makerbot filament is extensively tested in the USA and optimized for consistent flow through its Smart Extruder.

Additional Tech Specs

Makerbot has built an impressive ecosystem to support the Z18 with cloud-based storage, sharing, and remote 3D printing. Thanks to the new Smart Extruder+ upgrade, performance is more consistent than ever, ensuring even layers and a warp-free experience. The new upgrade has been tested for over 160,000 hours of seamless 3D printing and provides additional durability, sensor reliability, and enhanced workflow for businesses.

With the integrated camera, users can watch prints in real-time using Makerbot Mobile or Desktop applications. This is especially helpful for long, large, or complicated prints that the Z18 handles with ease. This results in industrial level, smooth-to-the-touch prototypes that require little post processing.
