Kapton Tape is a heat resistant tape that was used extensively by NASA in the Apollo space missions. Applied to 3D printing, it’s used to improve the heated print surface of your 3D printer for better adhesion – particularly when printing ABS.
ABS has a tendency to warp away from the print bed when cooling, potentially throwing off the Z axis of your print & ruining successive layers. To alleviate this problem, you can apply a thin film of Kapton tape to the print bed. Once the print bed has been heated to the appropriate temperature, the tape exhibits improved adhesion properties – reducing the risk of your ABS print warping away from the print bed. Once it cools with the printed item, the adhesion reduces – releasing the item easily. The Kapton tape can remain in place on the print bed, and be used for multiple prints. Some tests have indicated that more than a dozen printed items can be produced before the Kapton tape needs to be removed and reapplied.
In certain instances, Kapton tape can also be used for other applications within a 3D printer. When securing temperature sensors, excess cabling, or loose materials for example – Kapton tape can be ideal for both its adhesive & heat resistant properties.
Kapton tape is best applied when working with ABS. Though some users have also found success using PLA in combination with Kapton tape, most recommend standard blue painter’s tape. In addition to the desirable adhesion properties it offers, we like the ease at which it can be replaced once worn out – and the lack of residue it leaves on the print surface when removed (as compared to certain methods & materials for improved bed adhesion).
