About Leapfrog Creatr XL 3D Printer
Even at first glance, it’s immediately clear that the Leapfrog Creatr XL stands alone in terms of possible print size. With available build volume exceeding 37 liters, it is more than doubles the available build volume of Leapfrog’s other (already generously sized) printers. It does so while maintaining impressive precision and layer resolution, owed largely to the durable design and construction of the machine.
As with the rest of the Leapfrog line to date, the Creatr XL is constructed of a very sturdy aluminum frame. Metal XY and Z axis rods ensure long term reliability and consistency, standing up to the physical demands of extensive printing. The heated print bed is a thick plate of glass mounted on aluminum, ensuring a stable and warp-free print surface of a lifetime of the machine. As expected, stability is critical when printing vertically to the degree that this printer’s build volume allows. Leapfrog’s sturdy construction certainly does the job here, maintaining proper position & tolerances throughout a given print.
Leapfrog’s dual extruder setup is a perfect fit for this machine, allowing for the use of two different filaments over the course of printing. The dual extruder setup is well suited to printing easily dissolved support material, so you can take advantage of the maximum available print volume with properly supported overhangs.
As with the Creatr HS, the Creatr XL maintains a manageable desktop footprint by making the most of its vertical design. Filament sits protected below the print bed, and is fed to the extruders through enclosed protective plastic tubing. The durability of the hot ends and nozzles (along with the variety in available temperature options) mean many opportunities for experimentation with different filaments. Not limited to just ABS and PLA, the Creatr XL can take advantage of filaments like Nylon, PVA, Laybrick, and more.
Additional Tech Specs
The Creatr XL’s build area is 7.9″ x 10.6″ x 23.6″ (200mm x 270mm x 600mm), and features a minimum layer height of 50 microns (.05mm). In contrast to the high speed Creatr HS, the Creatr XL trades height for speed. While the Creatr HS tops out at 300mm per second, the XL more than doubles your available build volume – but tops out at 60mm per second. Given the larger margin for error over the course of a large print, this reduction in speed is less a limiting factor & more of a quality control to ensure consistent precision.
As with the Creatr HS, the Creatr XL features a versatile heated glass print bed. Some users have reported success printing directly onto the glass bed. However, we recommend the use of a Leapfrog print sticker for optimal adhesion, or as we prefer, carefully applied Kapton Tape.
